In May 2025, Andrew Sandor was elected to serve as State Chaplain for the Department of Maryland Veterans of Foreign Wars. Born in Washington, D.C., he spent his childhood in Colorado, Hawaii, Utah, and California before ultimately settling in Montgomery County, Maryland. After high school, he attended Summit International School of Ministry, during which time he worked in the chaplain department at Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
In 2005, Andrew joined the U.S. Army as an Infantryman, driven by a desire to bring peace to the senseless violence he witnessed in news reports about the Iraq War. He graduated basic training with honors and later deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division to Camp Taji, Iraq, from 2006 to 2008. For most of 2007, he and his unit were in sustained combat—the deadliest and most violent year of war for U.S. troops since Vietnam. Andrew’s unit became the first cavalry unit since Vietnam to conduct air assault missions during night raids on IED factories and high-level insurgent compounds. His squad successfully captured two of the highest-ranking insurgent leaders in Iraq at that time. Toward the end of his deployment, Andrew was wounded and medevaced back to the United States, where he was medically retired from the Army.
After his service, Andrew used the GI Bill to return to school. He was elected President of the Veterans Club at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, and again at the Universities at Shady Grove. He advocated for both campuses to establish robust veterans programs with full-time faculty and dedicated spaces for veterans to gather. His efforts were highly successful, and he was eventually hired to help develop the program further. Andrew graduated from UMBC with a double major in History and Political Science, and later attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to pursue a Master of Divinity degree.
Andrew has remained active in ministry, serving over the years as a pastor, youth pastor, and teacher in various churches. He currently serves as a chaplain with The Mighty 30, a veterans ministry at Platoon 22 Veterans Service Center in Frederick, Maryland, and as the NCOIC of the Chaplain Corps in the Maryland Defense Force. He also works part-time in private security. Andrew is blessed with a wonderful wife and twin boys.
